How to Tell Powerful Stories—Yours!

Use your powerful stories to communicate your value

In this course, you will learn a simple outline that you can use to create and tell your professional stories and help you convey to others who you are and what value you have to offer. We will create stories (outside the sessions) and practice telling them (in our group sessions) so we can more confidently and authentically engage with managers, leaders, colleagues, hiring managers, and others.

This course is for anyone who is looking for a job or considering changing jobs or careers. “The most successful job-hunting begins with your doing research on yourself…rather than beginning with research on the job market…. "

Your Coach

Mark is a Professional Certified Coach and a member of the International Coaching Federation. He holds a Certificate in Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University and is also a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach.

Growing up in a military family, Mark was drawn to a career of service—first as a Navy pilot, then as a consultant supporting federal agencies in the management of information systems and security. Mark learned about the value of coaching through leadership development programs and pursued training and education in coaching to become a better leader and manager himself. His own experiences with lifelong learning and development inform and reinforce his commitment to help others to shape their own careers and create the best version of themselves—at any age and any stage of life.

Program Description

In a series of four one-hour sessions, this program guides participants in creating impactful stories that capture the complete range of their professional talents and articulate their professional value in the workplace authentically and realistically. If our stories are memorable, we are memorable. Based on Richard N. Bolles’ What Color is Your Parachute? this program helps participants see and understand themselves through the lens of their real experiences and to use powerful language to express what they know about themselves and how they can bring value to their current role or future ones.

We all have stories to tell about our experiences--stories of success, disappointment, resilience, learning, and growth--and these stories can be powerful ways to represent ourselves to others. But many of us have never been encouraged to—or have even been actively discouraged from--talking about ourselves in authentic, positive ways.

In this personalized workshop, you will learn a proven outline for creating and telling stories about yourself; create and practice and telling stories that highlight the value of your experiences; learn and practice mining your stories for the transferable skills and talents they represent and learn how to provide and receive supportive feedback on how to tell your stories more effectively.

Participants who complete all four sessions will also be eligible for a 30-minute individual storytelling feedback session with the instructor—a $100 value—at no additional charge.

Why Career StoryBook Works

Career Storybook is a community of professional career coaches and counselors working with teams pursuing a common mission. We offer a collection of courses, activities, and success groups to take you from zero to happily employed. Relationship-based learning using reflective activities beats doing it on your own any day.

Career development can be self-directed (‘free’) or with a career coach (‘expensive’). We use an online group-based model that focuses on your needs and goals. Career Coaching is an investment in yourself. Career Storybook makes that investment accessible.

Personalized Learning

Our programs develop you as a person, a professional, or citizen while meeting your individual goals and interests. We offer personally meaningful learning experiences, and what is meaningful is engaging. And what is engaging has a deeper and more long-lasting impact.

Small Group Coaching

All our courses and groups have limited enrollment to ensure you get the attention you need and to foster trusting relationships necessary for you to risk growing. Mutual accountability drives creativity, problem-solving, and productivity. Coaches provide guidance while your group sustains your attitude and altitude.

Blended Delivery

We use the best of both learning mediums: online self-paced programs provide you the flexibility of time and place while saving travel and costs. Face-to-face or video meetings enable complex conversations, rewarding activities, and relationship development.

Interactive Programs

When you apply your new knowledge, skills, and perspective to interactive projects, you deepen your learning, your engagement, and have some good fun too. We use a variety of strategies: Problem-based learning, role plays, case studies, gamification, and fictionalization.

Write Your Story

Career coaching is an investment in yourself.

By discovering gifts, and deciding where you will apply your gifts, you increase your chances of professional success and life satisfaction.
